The curtain rolls onto a drum above the opening, and the whole assembly is under spring tension inside that drum. Common failures are the curtain coming out of the guides, the spring inside the drum losing tension so the door won't stay up, and the bottom rail bending after a knock.
Curtains also dent. A dented slat binds in the guide, and forcing it usually turns one damaged slat into several.
Roller doors are one continuous sheet of thin steel, so they show salt damage before heavier components do. Look at the bottom rail and the last half metre of curtain — that's where wind-driven salt spray sits and where rust starts.
Rinsing a beachside roller door with fresh water occasionally does more for its life than anything else you can do.
Same principle at larger scale, but a failed shutter usually means a business can't trade, so response time matters more than price. Say up front if it's commercial — it goes to an operator equipped for the size and the urgency.
