Try this before calling anyone

Change the battery — it's the cause more often than anything else, and a fading battery shortens range before it stops working entirely, so a remote that only works up close is usually just flat.

If the wall button works and the remote doesn't, the opener is fine and it's the handset or its coding. If neither works, it's the opener.

Coding and replacing handsets

Most openers pair a new remote through a learn button on the motor unit. Older systems use DIP switches that have to be matched. Universal remotes cover a lot of brands but not all of them, and rolling-code systems need matching properly.

If a remote has been lost rather than broken, it's worth clearing all codes and re-pairing the ones you still have. That's the point of doing it — a lost remote in a car parked on the street is a key to your house.

Keypads and phone control

An external keypad is the practical answer if you're in and out without keys. Newer openers add Wi-Fi so the door can be opened, closed and checked from a phone, which is genuinely useful on a holiday property you're not living in.
