That is the genuine emergency case, and most operators treat it as one. Do not leave a partly open door unattended if you can avoid it. If the door is stuck open and the opener has a manual release, the door can usually be brought down and locked by hand — but not if a spring has broken, because then nothing is carrying the weight.
Only when the springs are intact. The release disconnects the opener, leaving the springs holding the door — which is fine if they are sound and dangerous if they are not. If the door feels heavy or drops when released, stop and keep everyone clear.
