Tell us what the door is doing and we'll match it to someone who works on that type, in your area — firm price before work starts.
It carries the weight of the door — not the motor. A sectional door weighs somewhere between 80 and 150 kilos, and the opener is only strong enough to move it because the spring has already counterbalanced almost all of that mass.
So when a spring breaks, the motor hasn't failed. It is simply being asked to lift a weight it was never sized for. Running it in that state is how you turn a spring job into a spring and motor job.
A torsion spring stores an enormous amount of energy, and it holds that energy whether the door is open or closed. Releasing or winding it without proper winding bars is how people lose fingers — the bars are the tool that keeps your hands out of the path of the release.
The part itself is inexpensive. What you're paying a technician for is the technique, the correct spring rating for your door's weight, and the winding tension being set right. A spring wound wrong will fail again quickly.
**Torsion** springs sit on a shaft above the door and twist. They're the modern standard, last longer and fail more predictably.
**Extension** springs run along the tracks either side and stretch. Older, and genuinely more dangerous when they fail because there's nothing containing the pieces unless a safety cable has been fitted. If you have extension springs without safety cables, that's worth fixing regardless of whether they've broken.
If your door has two springs and one has gone, the other is the same age and has done the same number of cycles. Replacing both costs marginally more now and saves a second callout within the year. Any technician who doesn't suggest it should be asked why.

Where this job typically sits. Access is usually a bigger cost driver than size.
| Job | Indicative price | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Service call / diagnosis | $90 – $180 | Callout and assessment. Usually credited against the repair if you go ahead. |
| Torsion spring replacement | $250 – $600 | Priced per spring. Doors with two springs are normally done as a pair. |
| Cable replacement | $150 – $350 | Often done alongside springs — the two wear together. |
| Motor / opener repair | $150 – $450 | Boards, capacitors and gear sets. Cheaper than replacing the unit where the parts exist. |
| New motor / opener supplied and fitted | $450 – $1,200 | Depends on horsepower, drive type and whether Wi-Fi control is wanted. |
| Roller door repair | $180 – $600 | Curtain, drum, spring or guide work on a roller door. |
| Off-track / re-alignment | $150 – $400 | Common after something clips the door. Check the panels before assuming it's just tracks. |
| Panel or section replacement | $300 – $900+ | Per panel, and colour-matching an older door is the variable. |
| Remote or keypad replacement | $60 – $220 | Coding a new remote is often a five-minute job. |
| Full door replacement (existing opening) | $1,400 – $4,000+ | Sectional, roller or tilt, plus wind classification for the site. |
