Check this first

Pull the emergency release cord and lift the door by hand. If it's heavy, or it won't stay put halfway, the motor isn't your problem — the spring is. The opener has been straining against an uncounterbalanced door.

If the door lifts easily by hand and stays where you leave it, then the fault really is electrical or mechanical in the opener.

What fails inside an opener

**Gear sets** strip — usually a nylon gear designed to be the sacrificial part. Symptom is a motor that runs normally with no door movement. **Capacitors** fail, giving a hum with no motion. **Logic boards** die from power surges, which coastal storm season delivers plenty of.

All three are repairable where parts exist, which is generally cheaper than a new unit.

Repair or replace

Under about ten years old with parts available: repair, $150 to $450. Older than that, or a discontinued unit, and you're often better off replacing at $450 to $1,200 — which also buys you current safety features and usually app control.

One caveat worth knowing: a very old opener may not have modern auto-reverse safety. That alone is a reason to replace rather than nurse it along.
