**Springs** carry the door's weight. When one goes the door becomes almost impossible to lift and the motor strains but won't move it. This is the most common failure by a distance.
**Cables** fray and snap, usually from corrosion, and often take the door out of alignment as they go. **Rollers and tracks** wear or get knocked out of line. **The opener** — board, capacitor or gear set — fails electrically or mechanically. **Sensors** misalign and stop the door closing.
Almost everything else is a symptom of one of those five.
A door under about fifteen years old with sound panels is nearly always worth repairing. Springs, cables, rollers and motors are all replaceable parts, and doing the lot still costs a fraction of a new door.
Replacement makes sense when the panels themselves are damaged or corroded through, when the door is so old that parts have to be fabricated, or when it's a heavy timber tilt door that has warped. Be sceptical of a replacement quote that doesn't explain which of those applies to yours.
