Why doors come off track

Most often a cable snaps or comes off its drum on one side. That side drops, the door racks in the opening, and the rollers on the low side pop out of the track.

The other common cause is impact — a car bumper, usually — which bends a track or a panel and the door jumps at that point on the next cycle.

Don't force it

The instinct is to push it back into the track and try again. On a door with one live cable and one broken one, that puts the whole weight on a single point and can bring the door down.

Disconnect the opener with the emergency release, leave the door where it is, and keep cars and people out from under it. A crooked door is a repair; a dropped door is a replacement and possibly an injury.

What the repair involves

Cables replaced as a pair, drums re-seated and re-tensioned, tracks straightened or replaced, rollers checked. Typically $150 to $400 unless a panel is damaged too.

If the door came off because something hit it, have the panels checked properly — a bent section will keep binding even after the tracks are right.
